AYC has five classes of sailboats, many recreational kayaks, rowboats and a canoe, all of which are available for use at no charge to our member families and their children.

·         Optimist Dinghy: 8 ft. sailing prams that are safe, dry, and simple to sail, ideal for teaching new sailors.

·         JY-15: 15 ft. double handed sailing dinghies that are rugged and easy to sail, with comfortable self draining cockpits, mainsail and jib.

·         Club 420: 13 ft. double handed sailing dinghies are used primarily by our advanced racing students, but provide a challenging experience for adults as well. Can be sailed by two under mainsail and jib alone, but also allow the use of spinnaker and hiking trapeze as well, for those who "dare to fly".

·         Laser: 12 ft. single sail, single handed dinghies that can rig with either full sail or "radial rig" for the lighter sailor.

·         J-22: 22 ft. full keeled sailboats, each with a small outboard on the back to get you in and out of the harbor safely. The cabin has sitting headroom, two sleeping berths, and a comfortable cockpit for up to four adults.  It sails with a main and jib, and can fly a spinnaker as well.

·         Kayaks: We have many different sizes and styles of recreational level kayaks which are easy to use and stable on the water.

·         Canoe: We have a beautiful 16 ft. Old Town canoe that is a joy to paddle, either singly or with a passenger or two.

·         Rowboats: 8 ft. rowboats are available to members for practicing their strokes around the quiet backwaters of our harbor.

Please make arrangements with the staff for scheduling the use of these various crafts, and comply with the signup sheets in the clubhouse.  For certain sailboats you will have to be qualified by one of our sailing instructors for use of the craft.  Once certified, you will be able to use the boat on a first-come, sign-up basis.

AYC will be open the last two weekends in June, then daily beginning June 23rd through Labor Day weekend. Additionally we will be open weekends in September until Saturday, September 14th.

The clubhouse is open:

Monday through Friday - 9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.

Saturday & Sunday - 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.

You and your guests are always welcome during these hours, even if you just want to sit and chat under the umbrella at the end of the dock while you watch the hustle-bustle of the harbor.

The York Harbor Reading Room has invited members of AYC to join them on their deck for their fabulous Family Suppers on Thursday nights, from June 20 to September 27, from 6 - 9 p.m.   Due to the popularity of Friday nights, the YHRR has had to alter the schedule, but has offered additional nights to AYC members this year as follows:

•   Tuesday evening dinners are available in August only.

•   Wednesday night dinners are served from June 20th -September 26th

•   Thursday night dinners are served from June 21st-September 27th

•   Saturday nights that are available to the AYC on July 14 and July 21.

Please call in advance for dinner reservations at (207) 363-2450 or 363-2562.  There are occasionally a few exceptions to the dates for Reading Room special events.  Check the club bulletin board or your 2008 member directory for these specific dates.

Dress is casual, but no jeans, and payment, which is new this year, is by credit card. Your guests are welcome, but they must dine on your tab, or pay separately by credit card.

Bess King - AYC Club Program Director.  Bess retuns to AYC this summer as the Club Program director.  She grew up in a family of sailors, daysailing around Lake George and racing in northern New York, Vermont and Connecticut.  She has been both a participant in and instructor for NLGYC's Junior Sailing & Swimming Programs.  Bess is currently a Graduate student at UNH working on her Masters in Counseling.  She plans to continue to work with youths, both on and off the water.

Jennings Boley - Instructor.  Jennings grew up sailing with his family on the Maine coast, and joined AYC at age eight as a junior sailor.  Over the next eight years he became an active race team member.  In the spring of 2006 he completed a semester at sea with the Ocean Classroom Foundation on the 125’ staysail schooner Westward.  Last year he helped teach the Opti Race Team and Seamanship classes.  He will be continuing his education at Davidson College as a sophomore in the fall.

Gareth Hughes - Sailing Instructor, Adult Lessons, and Fleet Maintenance.  Gareth has sailed for over 40 years and has logged tens of thousands of ocean miles, he keeps himself busy in the winter sailing bigger boats.  The 2006/2007 season included two transatlantic crossings and trips to and from the Caribbean. He still holds to the mantra "the amount of fun to be derived from a boat is inversely proportional to it's size".

Christopher Yorston - Instructor.  Chris has been part of AYC since he was 6 years old, and loves sailing, being on the water and working with children. Last year Chrish worked closely with Nina and Whitney teaching beginners as well as intermediate. He also was a big part of the special events and regattas held at the club and participated in several JO’s & MIRC’s in the past. He attends York High School where he is a member of the Varsity Soccer as well as the YHS Chamber Singers.

Leah Hughes - Dock Steward - This is Leah's second year working at AYC, but she's no novice to sailing and the ocean, having been around boats for most of her life. Leah recently graduated from Gorham High School, and will be attending Bowdoin College this fall. She looks forward to another fantastic sailing season at Agamenticus, and she hopes you plan to have as great a summer as she will here on our docks!

Hugh Koeze – Instructor -  Hugh began his sailing career at AYC in 1998, and has since participated in every youth sailing class and on every race team offered – Optimist, 420 and Laser.  In addition to his position as Instructor-In-Training, he continues to sail on the 420 team.  He has just completed his sophomore year of high school.

Albert Nichols - Instructor - Albert has lived in York Harbor all his life and has been sailing since he was 6 or 7.  He goes to school at Deerfield Academy and he has just finished his sophomore year.  Albert has gone through all the junior classes and been on all the race teams at some time while at AYC.  Albert has been to all types of regattas large and small, and looks forward to being at AYC this summer.

Logan Shanney - Instructor-In-Training. This will be Logan's fifth year sailing at AYC and third year racing. Logan started her first two years sailing optis and JYs. I primarily race 420's and occasionally lasers and have sailed in numerous regattas. Although this year is her first year teaching, she helped at the Picnic Race last year and worked with Casey and Nina to teach a novice class. She is a rising junior and lives in New Jersey.
